Abstract

Hume reduced causality to the proximity and succession of two phenomena and denied the necessity that was previously thought between cause and effect and reduced it to human nature and mental habit. but Allameh Tabatabai considers the truth of causality to be more than just the proximity and sequence between two objects. In his view causality means dependence and reliance of the effect on the cause. Allameh Tabataba'i explains the way of the emergence of philosophical second concepts through the presence science and thus provides a basis for the idea of cause and effect. In this research Hume's and Allameh Tabatabai's points of view are mentioned in detail in the discussion of the origin of the concept of cause and effect, and the common points as well as the points of disagreement are clarified. Then, two opposing views of Allameh Tabatabai's view among contemporary Muslim philosophers are presented and criticized.
