The issue of tashkik (gradation or systematic ambiguity of existence) is a highly significant concept within Islamic thought, profoundly influencing the theoretical frameworks of Muslim philosophers, particularly Suhrawardi and Mulla Sadra. This issue has been explored extensively, especially within the Shiraz school by thinkers such as Sayyid Sanad, Allama Davani, and Ghiyath al-Din Dashtaki. This article examines Allama Bahabadi’s reflections on the issue of tashkik. It demonstrates that although Allama Yazdi, in some of his expressions, appears to uphold the principality of quiddity (mahiyyah) and considers existence (wujud) a secondary intelligible, much like his teacher Ghiyath al-Din Dashtaki, his ultimate view explicitly affirms the principality of existence and the supernumerary nature of quiddity. His deliberations on the applicability of tashkik to essential attributes (dhatiyyat) reveal that this was a contentious issue, defended by some philosophers. In conceptual discussions of tashkik, Allama Yazdi defends the view of the Peripatetics, denying tashkik in essential attributes and limiting it to the varying application of derivatives to their instances. However, in ontological matters, given his defense of the principality of existence, he advocates for tashkik in the objective reality of existence, contrary to Davani’s position.
