[English]
The moral philosophies of David Hume and Mullā Ṣadrā are grounded in distinct philosophical systems that offer fundamentally different accounts of the origin of moral values, the criteria of moral goodness and badness, moral obligation, and the ultimate end of human life. This study reconstructs and compares the philosophical foundations of their ethical theories, examining how their ontological, epistemological, and anthropological assumptions shape central issues in moral philosophy. Using a descriptive-analytical and comparative method, it first explicates the philosophical foundations of each thinker and then analyzes their implications for the objectivity of moral values, moral motivation, virtue, happiness, and moral obligation. The findings show that Hume, drawing on empirical naturalism, locates the source of moral judgments in human sentiments, sympathy, and experience, thereby providing a persuasive account of moral motivation while encountering difficulties in establishing an objective and universal foundation for moral values. By contrast, Mullā Ṣadrā, on the basis of the primacy and gradation of existence, substantial motion, the unity of the intellect and the intelligible, and the perfection of the soul, conceives ethics as an intrinsic dimension of human existence and grounds moral values in the real relation between human actions and the soul’s existential perfection or deficiency. The study concludes that the principal divergence between these ethical theories lies not primarily in their normative conclusions but in their underlying philosophical paradigms and their ontological, epistemological, and anthropological foundations. A coherent comparison of their moral philosophies therefore requires analysis at the level of these foundational principles.
