[English]
One of Martin Heidegger’s most fundamental questions in Being and Time, which marks a turning point in his philosophical reflections, concerns the understanding of the nature of Being. In his critique of the Western philosophical tradition and its forgetfulness of Being, Heidegger seeks the meaning of Being through an understanding of the ontological–existential structures of Dasein. Among the fundamental existential structures of Dasein that determine its other ontological possibilities, death occupies a central position. Dasein understands death not merely through the death of others, but as its ownmost and ultimate possibility. It is in the presence of death and nothingness that Being becomes open to a renewed possibility of reflection. Heidegger’s concern is not to conceive death as an event that simply leads to the cessation of life and the elimination of Dasein’s possibilities, but rather to question how death is present within the being of Dasein itself. For a Dasein that constantly projects itself toward the future, death is always already present. This paper aims to elucidate Heidegger’s conception of death as a constitutive presence in Dasein’s mode of being and argues that attentiveness to nothingness and death is a necessary condition for an authentic understanding of Being and life.
